Smoking Addiction
Smoking addiction… Cancer? … it really depends on each individual…
I bet you hear this expression all time: “I’ve know people that smoked all their life… and yet no lung trouble seems to bring them down.”
Think about it a little bit… I’m not a smoker, but .. I know for sure that when I want to relax… I jump in the first jacuzzi I see, to “sleep” there.
I know a smoker… every time I’m transforming into his father telling him to quit smoking… his reply to me always sounds like this: “My friend, let a man enjoy his moments of happiness! Few of them left, you know!”
Now, all you doctors out there… and parents.. hate me as much as you like… I totally agree with him. Why, you ask… Because life on earth demands smoking! 😀
I repeat: I don’t smoke… and probably when I’ll get married, she’d be a non-smoker too.
But still… To some people smoking addiction is “legit”. What do I mean by that? If your asking yourself how can smoking represent a good way to relax, that means you haven’t yet been through a lot of problems in your life. Maybe you heard about people committing suicide over a love, debt, loss, etc.**** happens… and you gotta deal with it…
Smokers chooses to inhale toxic fume into their lungs… I heard they feel better after one cigarette. Maybe it’s just based on self suggestion ( Placebo Effect ). But one thing is certain: with things going like they do nowadays, I don’t blame them.
For non-smokers, let me now tell you what you’re missing:
– 1 ml cigarette smoke = 10 000 x 1 ml most polluted atmosphere
– 1 cigarette = 4000 noxious substances
– smoker inhales 73 000 blows/year (20 cigarettes/day)
– nicotine activates increase of LDL (low density lipoprotein) – leads to atherosclerosis (hypertension, heart attack, cerebral hemorrhage, etc)
– increased risk of cancer
That is if you don’t spend too much time near smokers. Because if you do… than 60% you’re in for it too!
It has been demonstrated that nicotine acts like a super fast vehicle. Reaches brain, through pulmonary absorption, in only 7.5 seconds (faster than intravenous injection) and stimulates “pleasure areas” from septum (generating psychological comfort for a short period of time)
Here’s Jim Jarmusch with his way of saying “Life as we know it is… in a certain way…”
Coffee and Cigarettes (2003). I enjoyed the movie. I can’t really explain why… Have a peek (in this movie people analyze, are being analyzed in black and white – like coffee and cigarettes – notice how smoking addiction evolves in 11 stories presented)
Enjoy!
